My anti-iPhone
I can’t wait until 1Q08. Thats when the new Neo1973 smartphone will be finally released. Made by a company called FIC, this will be one of the first linux based, completely open sourced smart phones on the market.
What makes the Neo1973 get me all fanboyish giddy? It will be everything that the iPhone is not.
It will come completely unlocked. You can use it with any GSM carrier. No vendor contracts. No closed source proprietary third party applications. Developers are free to create applications. A whole new version of linux for mobile phones called OpenMoko has been created. It will have no binaries drivers. Full hardware specifications are published. There is even a page to show how to disassemble a Neo1973. No conventional phone manufacture would ever do that.
